On September 24, new meta tag features and new HTML parameter were announced by Google. The announcement published on Google's Webmaster Central Blog is of particular concern to content owners and websites who do not want their content to be published in the featured snippet area, which we call zero rank, for legal reasons. As you know, in addition to structured data fields, Google can also include article content as featured snippets in search results. This situation created negativities for sites that lost traffic because their own content or competitors appeared in this area. Let's take a lyrics site as an example. A lyrics site that ranks zero among all lyrics or lyric content among its competitors will most likely lose most of its traffic to this area.
For example, when we search for the song Rihanna - Diamonds on Greece Phone Number Google, all the lyrics are ranked zero, as you can see some of them in the screenshot below. rihanna diamonds lyrics zeroth position In this case, it was a matter of serious debate as it negatively affected competition and site traffic and also caused legal problems. However, Google seems to put an end to these discussions by announcing new meta tags and data-nosnippet feature, which we will examine in detail below. With the new tags, site owners will be able to prevent their content from being displayed as snippets, but this brings with it different discussions. One of the first questions that comes to our mind is whether you can trust that your competitors will do the same when you remove your content from the zeroth place, or whether you can give up competing with your competitors for this space even if it causes traffic loss from the zeroth place. We will see the answers to these questions together in late 2019 and 2020.
Now let's examine the new labels and features together. New Meta Tags and Their Uses First of all, after the new developments, Google announced new features that did not exist before, but will enable our newly added and featured snippets to be displayed to the user more effectively. The first of these is to mark/restrict our structured data using meta tags. In its published content, Google explains how to use these new features as follows; nosnippet The nosnippet tag is an existing tag that tells the Google bot that we do not want any written snippets to be shown from the relevant page.
